From Playdates to Peer Pressure: Parenting Ages 6-12

Congratulations, you survived the early years of parenting! Elementary and middle school bring new milestones, friends, and interests – and a newfound loss of control for parents. Join us to discuss external influences, increased access to technology, and how you and your child can navigate these important developmental stages, together.

Discussion Leaders

Melis Germeyan, MA is a mental health clinician and current Doctor of Psychoanalysis student at BGSP, with nearly a decade of experience working across a range of clinical settings in Istanbul and the Greater Boston Area. Her experience includes in-home therapy with children, adolescents, and families; school-based counseling; community mental health; and activity-based groups supporting children with autism and ADHD. She has also worked in hospital settings and currently provides individual therapy to adults with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of presenting concerns.

Luke Goldring, MA is a recent graduate of the Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at BGSP and has worked in both in-patient and out-patient settings, as well as residential settings.

Leah Alexander, Psya.D. is the Assistant Dean of Curriculum and serves on the faculty at BGSP. With a private practice in Topsfield, MA, working with children and their families is a particular interest of Dr. Alexander’s, striving to, as she describes it, therapeutically support people in this overworked, overburdened, overstimulated world we live in.

Objectives

The participant will be able to:

  1. Identify experiences that are taxing cognitive and emotional functioning and causing distress, and consider possible multi-layered variables affecting them.
  2. Identify three new ideas connected with a psychoanalytic understanding of developmental needs of this age group.
  3. Identify novel psychoanalytic methods of working with children of this age group and discuss possible ways this may enhance communication, understanding, and confidence, and lessen distress.
